Statement of research impact (see Birck site for example): Dr. Bermel’s quantum research focuses on the interactions between materials properties and quantum states, particularly photonic and topological states. Enabling techniques for his group’s work include density functional theory, finite-difference time domain, and S-matrix modeling. Key outcomes include predictive modeling and characterization of topological material-based quantum sensors, color center-based single photon sources and photonic quantum sensors.
