Dr. Carlson’s Quantum Materials Theory Group focuses on complex pattern formation, hysteresis, and nonequilibrium effects in quantum materials for applications ranging from superconductivity to neuromorphic computing. Our new conceptual frameworks for understanding and controlling complex pattern formation in electronic phase transitions have enabled the discovery of universal, fractal electronic textures across a variety of quantum materials.
